Nordeste
The town hall situated in the northeast of the island is called “Nordeste” (Northeast because it provides from the cardinal point) and it is composed by nine parishes.
Northeast (Nordeste) is known by its panoramic green landscapes, as the “Pico da Vara”, “Planalto dos Graminhais” and “Serra da Tronqueira”; the Natural park of Cauldrons, the sights like “Ponta da Madrugada”, where you can watch the sunrise and the “Ponta do Sossego” well known because of the Arnel’s lighthouse; Natural pools at “Ribeira do Guilherme” and Lombo gordo beach.
Known as the “Priolo” land because of a bird endangered species that can only be observed in the Northeast town hall it’s natural green habitat situated in “Serra da Tronqueira” .
This town hall has a total area of 101km² having more and more conditions for who is looking for natural tourism.
Among these years, craftwork has been very important in this town hall by being observed by Folklore outfit’s groups. These are the most common examples of disclosure to underline our traditions and costumes.
Besides common examples, you can also visit the Northeast Work House in “Vila do Nordeste” where you can meet craftswomen working manually through handlooms, quilts and blankets that once our ancestors used to wear. Craftwork not only functions with textile, since in “Freguesia da Salga” you can appreciate a store dedicated to the confection of corn leaf dolls called “A Folha do Milho”.
As gastronomy, we have lush restaurants that will offer you the best flavors of the region.
As bakery, try our corn and wheat bread from “Lomba da Fazenda” convicted by the hole island and old-fashion made (kneaded by hand and baked in traditional wood ovens. Then also, kneaded dough, baked cake, biscuits and yeast cake (all regional handmade products). In “Freguesia da Salga”, all breads and sweets are spread through the island.
